Blogging in the Time of Coronavirus

What to write when you have nothing to say

I’ve been pretty lucky in terms of how COVID-19 has affected me. I’m working from home for my day job, and my office is only open four days a week now. I’ve taken a pay cut due to these changes, but honestly without the commute and the occasional breakfast or lunch at the office the overall impact is largely negligible. I’m aware of how fortunate that makes me, and since I’m a generally introverted person anyway the other impacts of social distancing aren’t affecting me to keenly either.

But one thing I have noticed a huge impact on is my blogging here on Medium. I feel like I have absolutely nothing to say.

When this all started, I did post about things you could do in quarantine. However, since then all of my social media sites have been inundated with helpful guides and motivational posts which leaves me feeling like anything I say now will be just another tiny, useless voice in the crowd. I have thoughts and opinions, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t feel there’s much value in articulating them now when others have already said it all (and often said it better).

At the same time, blogging about other topics as if nothing was radically different in the world we live in seems dishonest. Some of the topics I have sitting in my draft…
